Music education in
the STM provides a balanced, sequential, and comprehensive K-12
curriculum, which fosters the understanding of the value of music as an
expressive art form through general music instruction and performance
oriented instruction and experiences.
In the STM students
will explore music in all its aspects:
* Singing
* Listening
* Understand and perform musical notation
* Understand the form and structure of music
* Master the physical skills necessary for musical
performance in a progression toward higher performance
technique
* Understand music in relation to culture and history
* Analyze and describe elements in music
* Build a foundation for music literacy
* Understand and perform musical expression
All children can
learn to make music.
All children should
be given the opportunity to develop their artistic potential to the
fullest.
Music is an
integral part of the holistic education of every child.
Music impacts the
entire school curriculum.
Music curricula
need to include state mandated standards and reflect the vision for
music education in the STM.
In both general
music instruction and performance-based instruction, interdisciplinary
learning occurs in such areas as history, literature, and cross-cultural
awareness.
Through the
achievement of excellence in performance-based instruction, students
learn teamwork, cooperative learning behavior, discipline, and positive
self-esteem.

Multiple forms of
assessment are used to communicate
achievement to students, teachers,
parents and the community.
The results drive instructional
practices, curriculum development and
promote critical thinking and
metacognition skills.
In addition, formative and
summative assessments provide
experiences that parallel state
assessments.
Assessments can be
implemented:
*
as a pre test to assess students’
existing knowledge
*
as a post test to assess
knowledge learned
*
to assess the effectiveness of
instruction
*
in a multiple choice, short
answer, cloze, and narrative formats
*
in the form of student
presentations, products, conferences,
and
running
records
