Summer Reading Policy 2009

Purpose: The summer reading program at Munster High School is an attempt by the teachers of English to see that their students have a broader background in reading and a chance to read for enjoyment.

General Requirements: All students in regular, honors and AP English classes will read three (3) books for the summer reading from specific lists assigned.  Students in the basic English classes will read two (2) books.  One of the books for the honors and AP classes is a required book.  (See the make-up book option explained below.)  There will be four assigned summer testing dates and one testing date set by each classroom teacher in the first two weeks of school.  Students are not required to test during the summer; tests other than the required tests may be taken on any of the five dates but must be completed on or before the classroom teacher’s assigned date.  The required test must be taken once school starts.  The students will be given reading comprehension tests which will count for twenty-five (25) percent of their grade for the first six weeks’ grading period.

Seven Lists of Books:

The first list identifies the books that regular 9th and 10th grade students may read.

The second list identifies the books that regular 11th and 12th grade students may read.

The third list identifies the books that Honors 9th and 10th grade students may read.

The fourth list identifies the books that Honors 11th grade students may read.

The fifth list identifies the books that AP students may read.

The sixth list identifies the books that basic 9th and 10th grade students may read.

The seventh list identifies the books that basic 11th and 12th grade students may read.

All regular 9th and 10th grade students may also read from the Honors 9th and 10th grade list, and all 11th and 12th grade students may also read from the Honors 11th grade list.  Honors students may choose only from the Honors list.  AP students may choose only from the AP list.

OPTIONAL make-up book: A test may be taken on an optional make-up book to replace a low test score.  This optional make-up book is subject to the following criteria:

a.) If a student scores at 60% or above on each of the first three tests, he or she has the choice whether to use the make-up book score to replace one of the first three.

b.) If a student scores below 60% on any of the first three tests, he or she MUST use the make-up book score to replace one of the first three.

c.) The optional make-up book may not replace the required book score for honors and AP classes.

Please note: The make-up test may only be taken on the last summer reading date or with the classroom teacher at the beginning of the school year.

Specific Rules:

  1. Any student who attended Munster schools for all or part of the previous school year is responsible for reading all three books and for taking the tests.
  2. If a student who has not attended Munster Schools moves into the district between the end of the school year and July 1, the student will have one book waived.  The guidance department provides the necessary information about summer reading to all new students.

3.      If a student who has not attended Munster schools moves into the district between July 2 and August 1, the student will have two books waived.  The guidance department provides the necessary information about summer reading to all new students.

4.      Expelled students remain responsible for all books for the grade level at which they return to school.

5.      If students have failed a course in which summer reading tests counted and they are repeating the same course, they may but do not have to read the books for the course again.

6.      If a student takes a test in another student’s name, using another student’s ID number, both students will receive a zero (0%) for that test.

7.      Seniors who do NOT have literature or composition first semester must take the three (3) tests in the summer or sign up to test during the assigned times early in the first semester.

8.      Students who do not complete tests by the assigned times early in the first semester will be given a grade of zero (0%) for those tests.

9.      The required book tests for honors and AP classes may not be taken during the summer.  The teacher at the start of the semester will test these books.

10.  Students taking tests must be able to show a school or equivalent picture ID before taking the tests.

Summer reading tests will be given in the Resource Lab.  Entering at the main entrance of the school, students should turn right and walk to the north building. The lab is located close to the library entrance.
