Choosing a career can be a daunting task. Some
seem to know at an early age what they want to do, while others struggle
to find what interests them, even into college. Some ways to help
you figure out what careers might be good for you include:
JOB SHADOWING: This is spending the
day following someone in their job to see if it is really what you
thought it would be.
INTEREST INVENTORIES: This is usually
a questionnaire that asks you about your likes and dislikes, your values
and what you think is important in a career.
ASKING QUESTIONS: Ask questions about
careers to your high school counselor. They may not have all the
answers, but they are a great resource and can help point you in the
right direction. Ask questions to your family and friends; you may
never know what career you'll discover just by talking to someone.
TAKE THE ASVAB: The Armed Services
Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a career exploration and planning
program that includes a multiple-aptitude test battery, an interest
inventory, and various career planning tools designed to help you
explore the world of work. You must be at least 16 years old to
take the test. Although the ASVAB has ties to the U.S. Department of
Defense, there is NO military obligation to students who take this test.
